Gustave Doré, whose full name was Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré, was a celebrated French artist, illustrator, and engraver. Born on January 6, 1832, in Strasbourg, France, he gained international fame for his richly detailed and imaginative illustrations for a wide range of literary classics. His most notable works include illustrations for Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy,” Miguel de Cervantes’ “Don Quixote,” John Milton’s “Paradise Lost,” and the Bible. Doré’s dramatic and intricate style left a lasting impact on the field of illustration, making him one of the most influential artists of the 19th century. He passed away on January 23, 1883, in Paris, France.

Xylography is a printing technique that involves carving an image or text into a wooden block, inking the raised surfaces, and then pressing the block onto paper to create a print. This method, known for its precision and ability to produce detailed images, was widely used before the advent of modern printing technologies.

Gustave Doré utilized xylography to create his famous Bible illustrations. He meticulously carved intricate and dramatic scenes from biblical stories into wooden blocks.
